Miami Restaurants Feel the Early-Eighties Bite
"The restaurant business is no longer a money machine," asserts WTVJ-4 reporter Alan Mendelson in this 1982 story. Rising expenses are eating into the profits of every dish served to hungry patrons, notes Mendelson, who gets backup from Bruce Hyatt, an executive at Benihana of Tokyo, and Arthur Horowitz, owner of Arthur's Eating House in the Brickell area.
An interesting note -- Brickell-area restaurants were booming in the early 1980s, says Horowitz, due to the "tremendous growth" of "insurance companies, bankers, attorneys, accountants, et cetera." Brickell's days as a high-demand residential area were yet to come in 1982.
