Exploring SmplTrek's MIDI implementation (170 BPM oldschool DnB - Smpltrek + LaunchControl XL)
I lately tested out the @SONICWARE Smpltrek's MIDI implementation and found out it works great in combination with a controller that supports multi channel MIDI. In my case the @NovationTV Launch Control XL proved to be a perfect companion.
Using a controller improves and enhances the performance capabilities of the Smpltrek and overcomes some limitations that i encountered using the machine in a live environment.
As you can see in the video, I mapped channel 1 to 8 of the Smpltrek with the corresponding Launchcontrol channel.
In my configuration the first row of pots is used to change the filter (eq) frequency, the second row changes the filter type and the third row set the send FX amount.
The fader control the volume.
The first row of button starts/stop a sequence (equivalent of pressing the Smpltrek pad), while the second row just change the mute state (the sequence continues to play).
I also tried other configurations, for example to handle the master fx parameters or change a track pan.
I also plan to show how to use another sequencer to play the Smptrek drum / instrument tracks... but that another story (and another video)
The advantage of an external controller over the newly introduced performance mode is that you can control the parameters of more than one channel simultaneously and without menu diving.
