Just a quick video demoing some of the different tones I am able to get out of my Squier Contemporary Active Jazzmaster kitted out with BKP Black Hawks and partial coil splitting switching.
With the switching options comprised of standard three way switching (bridge pickup, both pickups, neck pickup) and a push/push tone pot to activate partial coil split mode for both pickups at once, the guitar becomes quite versatile!
If you were wondering what I used for dirt, it was the lead channel of my mesa boogie studio preamp boosted with a Crowther Hot Cake. Cleans just used the rhythm channel. For recording, the preamp was connected to my Harley Benton GPA-400 Power Amp, which I have connected to my Marshall JCM 900 4x12 1960A cab loaded with Celestion G12T-75 speakers. This was recorded to my DAW with a shure SM57 and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface.
As with my last video, here is a list of the mods I have done to the guitar:
Bare Knuckle Pickups Black Hawk Ceramic Humbucker set. These passive pickups deliver the best of both worlds, the clarity of active pickups with the dynamics of a passive, all without the need of a 9V battery!
Gotoh SG381 MGT Locking Tuning Key Set, improved stagger and locking ability over the stock tuners, which are average at best.
Bone Nut. Improved sustain, tonality and tuning stability over stock plastic nut
Electronic overhaul. Full cavity shielding with conductive adhesive copper tape. New pots, including a CTS 500K volume pot, and a push/push 500K pot for partial coil spliiting using 4k7 resistors. Treble bleed comprising sprague .001 mfd cap and 120k 1/4W resistor added to volume pot. Sprague 0.022 cap used for tone pot. Wired with vintage cloth wire. I reused the existing jack and selector switch.
These mods make this guitar truly unique in looks, and versatile in tones which my next video will demonstrate!
