Cell Membrane Membrane:
Cell membrane is also known as plasma membrane.
It consists of lipid bilayer.
Cell membrane is a semipermeable or selectively permeable membrane.
I consist of phospholipid bilayer.
It is thin , elastic membrane.
It is outer covering of cell
Structure of Cell Membrane:
Cell membrane is Made up of three parts
1. Lipids (40%).
2. Proteins (52%)
3. Carbohydrates (1-5 %)
1. Lipids : there are two types of lipids
a . Phospholipid:
It contains one head which is hydroponics and two tails which is hydrophobic.
b. Cholesterol:
Cholesterol lie between phospholipid.
It maintain the fluidity.
2. Proteins:
There are two types of proteins
a. Integral protein:
Integral protein is permanently attached to the cell membrane
It is embedded in the cell membrane.
It form channel.
b. peripheral Peripheral protein:
It is loosely attached to the cell membrane.
It is present outside the cell membrane.
3. Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates help in cell identity.
Carbohydrates are of two types
a. Glycolipids :
It is attached to the lipids.
b . Glycoprotein:
It is attached to protein
Function of Cell Membrane:
1. Provide Protection to the cell
2. Help in cell identity
3. It provides shape to the cell membrane
4. Cell adhesion
5. Act as barrier
