Acclaimed musician and visual artist Sally Grayson unveils "The Empty Place" — a devastatingly beautiful song that gives voice to the depths of loss, exile, and the weight of collective grief. Inspired by the true story of a woman in Gaza, Palestine, who returned home from buying flour to find her house and family destroyed, the song is an elegy to lives lost and a meditation on the heartbreak of displacement.
With intimate, close-mic vocals reminiscent of Beth Gibbons, a sorrowful choral arrangement, deep synths, and waves of distant guitar noise, "The Empty Place" sonically captures the rawness of grief. The wordless, choral-like chorus transcends language, giving shape to mourning that defies words—a soundscape that echoes the pain of those forced to witness destruction from afar.
The accompanying music video features Palestinian dancer Samer Kaiber, whose life as a refugee and artist adds a powerful emotional and physical expression to the video. Having to flee Syria during the war and now living in Germany, Kaiber brings the experience of displacement and longing into his performance. Filmed in his small, personal apartment—a space that offers safety but never quite home—the video explores memory, loss, and the quiet ache of seeking belonging. Through his movement, Kaiber reflects grief, resilience, and a deep empathy for those who remain in Gaza, Palestine.
Beyond its personal narrative, The Empty Place speaks to a larger, collective mourning—a grief shared by communities around the world who have experienced war, exile, and the erasure of home. It is not only about Gaza, Palestine; it is about every person forced to carry the weight of loss, and those who witness it, powerless but not indifferent.

Watermelon Sisters is a U.S.-based nonprofit providing urgent, life-sustaining aid to Palestinians in Gaza, including food, water, and medical care. Founded in 2024 by a granddaughter of Palestinian refugees, the organization works directly with a team on the ground in Gaza. Their mission is to turn grief into action through solidarity, justice, and tangible support.
