High Altitude Disease: WHAT CAN WE DO?
The Association has worked over the last several years to create genetic tools to help breeders better combat High Altitude Disease (HAD), also known as brisket disease,. The pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) EPD is helping operations remove high-risk HAD individuals earlier in life, not only to remove from the herd, but also influence breeding decisions for the next generation.
To potentially enhance the accuracy of the PAP EPD and broaden genetic tools, the Association encourages producers to submit DNA samples on cattle that die from HAD or have chronic symptoms of the disease. Information from these samples could lead to increased accuracy, providing cattlemen more information for their breeding decisions and ultimately, decreased deaths due to HAD.
