The Eagle Nebula - Animation
This is an animation of the Eagle Nebula, also known as Messier 16 or NGC 6611. Its name derives from its shape that is thought to resemble an eagle.
It is a young open cluster with about 460 stars in the constellation of Serpens, 7000 light years away. The nebula contains several star-forming dust and gas regions, including the so called "Pillars of Creation", which were discovered by Hubble in 1995. These observations greatly improved the scientific understanding of processes inside nebulas.
