Indian painting has a very long tradition and history in Indian art, although very few early specimens have survived due to climatic conditions. The earliest Indian paintings were cave paintings of prehistoric times, petroglyphs found in places such as Bhimbetka shelters, some of the stone age cave paintings found among the rock shelters of Bhimbetka, about 10,000 years old.
