As a fitness professional, it's common to hear someone say: "oh my gosh, you should never lockout your knees on a leg press!" I've guided numerous clients through the intricacies of leg-based exercises. One common question that comes up is the issue of "locking out" your knees during these workouts. It's generally a rule of thumb in the fitness world to avoid locking out your knees during leg exercises, as it can place considerable strain on the knee joints and possibly lead to injuries over time.

However, there's an exception to this rule which I've observed when it comes to the 45-degree leg press. Unlike other leg exercises like the vertical leg press or squats, the 45-degree leg press's unique force vector doesn't oppose the knee joint directly. This observation has led myself and other fitness professionals to believe that it could be acceptable to fully extend your legs until the knees lock when performing this particular exercise.

Let's delve a bit deeper into the reasons:

Balanced Force Distribution: The angled setup of the 45-degree leg press allows for a more even distribution of force across your legs. In contrast, exercises like squats subject your knees to more direct pressure from gravity when you stand straight and lock your knees.

Enhanced Range of Motion: By allowing your knees to naturally reach a straight position during a 45-degree leg press, you're enabling your legs to go through their full range of motion. This practice can enhance flexibility, support joint health, and ensure a more comprehensive muscle workout.

Always remember, though, that the key to safely extending your knees lies in control and moderation - it's never about forcing your body into unnatural or painful positions. In terms of strength training, a universal strategy doesn't exist.

All leg press machines aren't identically constructed, and everyone's joint structure and function are unique. It's crucial to tailor your workout regimen to your physique, taking into account your constraints and aligning with your fitness aspirations.
