Methane is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas, roughly 86 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. It significantly contributes to climate change and poses serious environmental and health risks. Methane levels have surged over the last century because of the excessive emissions from fossil fuels. Oil and gas companies contaminate our air by emitting methane and other toxic chemicals like cancer-causing benzene. This endangers the health and livelihoods of communities near extraction sites, especially for the more than 18 million Americans who live within one mile of oil and gas production facilities.
