1715 – Death of King Louis XIV of France: King Louis XIV of France, also known as the Sun King, died after a reign of 72 years, the longest in French history. His reign was marked by the expansion of French influence in Europe, the construction of the Palace of Versailles, and the centralization of power in the monarchy.
1923 – Great Kanto Earthquake: The Great Kanto Earthquake struck the Kanto region of Japan, including Tokyo and Yokohama, causing widespread devastation. The earthquake, which measured between 7.9 and 8.2 on the Richter scale,killed over 140,000 people and led to significant social and political changes in Japan.
1983 – Korean Air Lines Flight 007 Shot Down: Korean Air Lines Flight 007, a commercial flight from New York City to Seoul, was shot down by a Soviet fighter jet after it strayed into Soviet airspace. All 269 passengers and crew aboard were killed. The incident intensified Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union.
