Grammar - Class 9: The verb phrase
In this class, we analyze the structure of the verb phrase in terms of specifier, head and complement from a Traditional Grammar perspective - In other words, we have adapted (following Wekker and Haegeman 1978) the notions of head, complement and specifier used in X-bar theory to the a traditional analysis of syntactic structure of clauses in English. Also, we have resorted to the notions of transitive, intrantisive and copula in order to account for the seven types of clause patterns typically found in English: Intransitive, Intransitive + Locative Complement, Copular, Mono-transitive, Di-transitive, Complex-transitive, Transitive+DO+Locative Complement and Transitive + DO + Object(ive) complement. Finally, we highlight the reasons why we believe it is important to understand and learn the verb patterns of the English language (see video for said reasons). Hope you'll enjoy it!
