Goblin slayer episode one definitely stirred the pot amongst anime fans with many believing it to be too crass but this level of intentionality in subverting expectations is an appreciated change of pace in the anime world. What are your thoughts on this crazy episode? Note: it is not for the faint of heart!

Goblin Slayer episode 1 is genius.
It toys with our expectations. We’re shown kindhearted, gullible characters and the threat of the goblins is severely downplayed, giving us a false sense of security.

The leader clumsily swings his longsword in the tight cave, foreshadowing what’s about to happen. Notice how the camera changes just as we’re supposed to see the other path in the cave. Excellent directing.

The goblins show their creepy little faces and they don’t appear to be a huge threat at first until they start to overwhelm the party with their numbers. Their leader ineptly swings his longsword and disarms himself on the ceiling rock. We then witness the brutality of the goblins firsthand but little did we know it’s about to get worse. Like…a lot worse.

Just as all hope seems lost, we’re introduced to the one person that’s dedicated his life to hunting goblins with a level of efficiency that’s unmatched.

In 20 minutes Goblin Slayer gave us the scale of this world, the rules within, a horrific problem, and a character we genuinely want to know more about.
