We welcome you into the tranquil lakes and wooded islands with an Ojibwe greeting, Aaniin [ah-neen]; “hello,” “welcome” and “I see your light”. You are brought into an immediate and calming connection with the land, surrounded by the enduring Lake Ontario and the Toronto Islands. Prior to 1851, Taddle Creek ran beneath the present location of Kerr Hall and the Recreation & Athletics Centre, and flowed through the land to Lake Ontario.
The aim of this immersive space is to recognize and honour the history of this land and the First Nations peoples who both lived and live here, while also drawing attention to the many gifts offered by nature. Since time immemorial, First Nations peoples have understood that a connection with nature positively impacts many aspects of our lives. More recent study has reached the same conclusion.
Like being physically active, exposure to nature improves mental and physical health, academic resilience, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. It increases both interest and enjoyment in learning, while also playing a key role in developing environmental stewards towards a better future.
