Back in 2014, Sony released the a6000, a mirrorless camera meant to take on Canon and Nikon, by packing incredible specs in features in a fairly low cost package. The camera changed the game for mirrorless as well as DSLR cameras, it ended up being Sony’s bestselling camera, and eventually, the bestselling mirrorless camera. 2 years later, the camera is entering it’s third iteration with the Sony a6500, a 4k capable, sensor stabilized camera, with dynamic range so good, it’s essentially a small little cinema camera. But what about the a6000? Is it worth picking up nowadays, for the new street price of about $500? Over the last couple of days I’ve had the pleasure of using the a6000, and I’ve been quite impressed. The first noteworthy feature that stuck out to me, was the incredible autofocus. Even when shooting video, I kept the camera in autofocus and never had any issues finding focus. As someone who shoots Canon, I don’t have any usable autofocus for video with my T2i. The cheapest camera capable of good video autofocus in Canon’s line is the 80d which costs around 1100. Dynamic range is exceptional as demonstrated by these stills. The cameras oled viewfinder isn't amazingly sharp, but definitely a nice feature for using outside in video. The camera shoots 1080p video in the avchd codec which is honestly fine despite what some people might tell you. The menu system on the camera was a bit clunky, and in my opinion quite a bit less intuitive than Canon’s. It took me a while to figure out where everything was, and the lack of touchscreen certainly didn't help. I only tested the camera with one lens, which wasn't exactly fast, but proved adequate for my testing. To my eyes Sony’s color science isn't quite on par with Canon’s and seems to blend yellow with into many different colors, creating skin tones that I personally don't really like. However, that's a topic for another video. As far as a camera that just works well in auto mode, and is ready to go out of the box, the Sony a6000 definitely fits the criteria. At its current low price, it's honestly a steal, and I definitely recommend it if you’re ok with the small drawbacks I mentioned. My only reservation is that its colors are a little strange to my eyes, but that's something that can be tweaked a fair bit in post. Also, like any Sony mirrorless camera, battery life was a major weak point, likely because of the OLED viewfinder and small camera frame. It definitely made me miss the outstanding battery life from my Canon T2i, and most all Canon cameras. The camera did not however overheat at all when I was recording video, but this definitely has something to do with the fact that the camera shoots 1080p not 4k, as Sony’s mirrorless line is infamous for overheating when shooting video. This camera is very capable of taking excellent stills as made evident by these samples. So if you're looking for a high quality mirrorless for a low price, this is the camera for you.
