High fidelity audio, a wonderful excuse for people like us to part ways with hundreds of dollars of our hard-earned money. Best of all, once we get our hands on our first piece of audiophile gear, the thrown in the box earphones that came with our phone, stock car speakers, and home movie set ups all start to sound like a muddy, washed out mess that can’t hold a candle to our new gear. The day I first plugged in my ATH R70Xs felt like hearing music for the first time, I had the sensation of being in the room with the artist, completely immersed in the sound. You can’t really talk about audiophile headphones without at least the mention the Sennheiser HD600s. After reading comment after comment pushing me to try what many consider to be the most legendary pair of audiophile cans, I had to give in, and see if these open backs, reference headphones are really all they’re cracked up to be. Sennheiser launched these guys back in 1997, a full two years before I was born. Since then, they’ve managed to remain the most recommended, well reviewed pair of high-fidelity cans essentially ever. So, today we’re going to find out whether these headphones actually are as amazing as everyone says. After 22 years, are the Sennheiser HD600s still worth getting?
The HD600s are the product of another era. It was the late 90s, and people’s sense of fashion was, rather different than today. The oddly speckled headband may have even be considered stylish, I don’t know. In my opinion, this design hasn’t aged terribly well, and contributes to a design that shows it age more than other part of the headphone. I personally wouldn’t wear these around, as I think they look pretty goofy compared to something like my R70xs. For a lot people though, this really doesn’t matter, and these headphones will probably never leave their desk. I think Sennheiser would be smart to consider a redesign. The build quality of the cans is pretty great, and there are a number of reports from users who have held on to the same pair for the last 20 years, only needing to replace the earpads a few times. The detachable stock cable is pretty flimsy and cheap feeling. This is something I’ve heard a lot of people complain about it, and something I think Sennheiser would be smart to consider changing. When it comes to actual comfort, a lot of people disagree. User forums have people saying these are the softest, most comfortable of headphones while others detest the 600s as the tightest, clampiest, and most agonizing cans out there. This is going to depend on the size of your head, and for me, someone with a rather large cranium, these were less than comfortable. With time, that started to improve, and a lot of people will tell you these headphones will start to feel better after wearing them for a while. I experimented with a looser fit, and after a while they started to feel fine. The headphones are by nature, just pretty clampy, and this means that your mileage may vary with fit. Tristan, another member of the team, and the man who taught me most of what I know when it comes to audio, found the 600s fit just fine for him. Compared to my everyday pair of R70xs, which are extremely comfortable thanks to their 3d wing support system, the 600s were lacking. The headphones are open back, which means they are not meant to be worn out and about. If you wear these things in public, people will hear everything you are listening to loud and clear. The lack of seal also means you will hear everything in your surroundings. This is not a bad thing. In fact, this open back design is one of the main reasons these headphones sound so great. However, this is something to really keep in mind if you’re thinking of buying these: they are honestly meant to stay at home or be used a in a quiet room by yourself. While this is completely expected for audiophile customers, its worth mentioning for the average consumer who’s just looking for a really great sounding pair of cans. Ultimately, the HD600s are a light, sturdy, and in my opinion kind of silly looking pair of headphones.
