On April 15, 2024, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and Lands & Forests Consulting performed our second successful prescribed burn at Albion Hills Conservation Park in the Town of Caledon.

Grassland habitats are important ecological communities that are in significant decline throughout Ontario. The loss of healthy grasslands has led to a decline in plants and animals that depend on this type of habitat, including the Monarch butterfly.

Prescribed burns are an important restoration tool used to maintain and protect these quickly disappearing grassland ecosystems. The low-intensity, fast-moving fire removes invasive plants that are not adapted to burning. However, native prairie species, with their deep roots, are left unaffected and can thrive and grow in the newly burned area.

Prior to European settlement, fire played a key role in maintaining our grasslands, and TRCA is excited to apply this tool to our meadows! We expect this site to quickly flourish with native vegetation.
