A basic run down of Visual Studio's text overwrite or also known as "OverType".
Basically you'll need to toggle on & off the "Insert / Overtype" function for visual studios. Find the "INS key" or the hot keys to trigger the "INS" function for your Operating system / computer brand. Windows & Linus tend to have the same hot keys while Mac tend to have another set of keys different from Windows & Linus.
More Solutions:
If pressing the Insert key doesn't work, try double clicking the INS/OVR label in the lower right corner of Visual Studio. (This depends on your version of visual studios)
Visual Studio 2013 and Win 8.1. It was Shift + "0 on the number pad". Or just the "0 on the number pad key" if there is a INS is below the 0 key.
Some MacBook's shortcuts for Insert" was Fn + Enter/Return. (Depends on your laptop build and OS). You'll have to google your versions INS hotkey.
2016 version of "Visual studios": If you don't have an Insert key, you can press Ctrl+Shift+I (on Windows and Linux) or Cmd+Shift+I (on Mac).
If you have "Parallel Operations" then you should also have a hot key to trigger your insert function on your insert key. Such as "Windows key + Insert key" or "Command (aka: CMD) key + Insert key". You'll have to look up your computer's hot key for insert if you do have parallel operations on your pc.
