Preparing students to succeed in an increasingly digitized world requires imparting more than just traditional subject-based knowledge. Students must become adept at problem-solving, develop collaboration skills, demonstrate creativity and critical thinking, and the like. Until recently, it’s been difficult to measure problem-solving skills as traditional assessments often contain test items that are scored based on a student’s final answer. However, by deploying digital assessments that include interactive items built using Portable Custom Interactions (PCIs), it’s possible to open the window to more creative and immersive testing experiences and see a student’s thought process throughout an entire problem-solving activity.

In this presentation, Jean-Philippe Rivière, Founder of Wiquid, and Patrick Plichart, Co-founder and Solutions Architect at Open Assessment Technologies will discuss the use of PCIs to break with conventional assessment and impart authentic context to test questions that move beyond multiple choice. We will showcase open-source PCIs, including those developed for the French Ministry of Education to measure collaboration, as well as science and math simulations developed for Geogebra.
