The Real Hex House in Tulsa Oklahoma
This is based on a true story that topped national headlines in 1944. I have been researching and documenting the events of the Tulsa Hex House that occurred before, during, and after the arrest of Carolann Smith in March of 1944 for holding two woman as prisoners and slaves in her home basement.

The Hex House of Tulsa Oklahoma is one of the scariest Halloween attractions in the nation. It was inspired by a true story. The Real Hex House was a duplex located at Ten East Twenty-first street.
During the years that Carolann Smith had resided in the duplex her neighbors had witnessed bizarre behaviors. In 1944 Smith illegally obtained seven World War II ration books falsely claiming she had six children and the ration board asked the Tulsa Police to investigate.
The police department interviewed Smith's neighbors first, and those neighbors had stories to tell. One incident had to do with a midnight backyard burial. Smith standing on a balcony shouted orders to some people below on how to bury a small casket.
Neighbors also reported that screams and growls were occasionally heard coming from the duplex. However, when the police did investigate Smith's home they discovered dastardly deeds that were much worse than fraud or a midnight burial. Two young women were found living in the basement of Smith's home.
One woman claimed that Smith had hexed them causing them to follow her orders. Smith did have several books on mind control and brainwashing. Virginia Evans was 31 at the time and Willeta Horner was 30. These women had been beaten, starved, used as slaves, and kept captive in Smith's home for seven years.
They were only allowed to leave to go to work and they were forced to give all of their paychecks to Smith. Smith told the women that they would receive big rewards in heaven for helping her. Smith had also managed to scam $17,000 over the seven years from Evans's father by claiming Evans had been ill and Smith was treating her.
Smith also collected money from the life insurance policies on several people who had died that were close to her – including her father, late husband and housemaid. The police did dug up the small coffin and found the remains of a dog. Smith had the women lie about a neighbor claiming that he had assaulted them.
For this crime Smith who was 51 years old at the time was sentenced to one year in prison. The Hex House became a popular Halloween attraction until it was torn down in 1975. The basement was filled in and the property was turned into a parking lot.
After Smith was released from prison she left Oklahoma and disappeared. Not much is known about the life of Carolann Smith before or after her time living at the Hex House. Most likely, because Carolann Smith was not her real name.
