Comic books always read better with more melanin. ✊🏾 This video is a celebration of progress — not just for diversity’s sake, but for the quality of storytelling that comes with authentic Black representation. In this list, I count down the Top 10 New Black Superheroes, meaning characters created after the year 2000 who’ve earned their place in the comic book mainstream.
This list highlights the next generation of Black excellence in comics. We’re talking heroes who aren’t just sidekicks, background noise, or “the Black version” of another character. These are fully realized, plot-driving, title-headlining characters with their own voice, their own legacy, and growing fanbases across both comics and adaptations. 🔥🦸🏾♂️🦸🏾♀️
💡 NOTE: Miles Morales is NOT on this list — but only because he was already ranked in my Top 10 Black Superheroes of All Time list. And let’s be real: Miles Morales was a cultural earthquake. His success cracked the door wide open and encouraged Marvel, DC, and indie publishers to take more chances and create new Black heroes who could hold their own — and that’s exactly what this list is all about.
This countdown includes fan-favorite characters you may already know — and a few you definitely should. Some have been adapted to animation, others are on the shortlist for live action, and many are holding it down in monthly titles right now.
