Perm Krai. The Vilva River
The Vilva is a typical mountain river in the Gornozavodsky District of Perm Krai.
The river, 170 km long, is the largest tributary of the Usva River. The Vilva originates in high-mountain marshes, quickly gaining strength in the spring, and is suitable for rafting within 25 km of its source.
The name translates from the Komi-Permyak language as "new water." The riverbed is filled with rocks, forming rapids with swells and gorges, many of which are quite difficult to navigate.
The Vilva is most navigable immediately after the ice melts, for 2-3 weeks. However, it's important to keep in mind that the meandering and shallow nature of the river can sometimes cause ice jams. Therefore, it's a good idea to read other people's recent reports before starting your rafting trip.
Rafting trips on the Vilva usually begin in the village of Novovilvenskoye. The village is 300 km from Perm. The road surface condition for the last 55 km from the village of Promysla to the rafting start is quite poor. Logging trucks destroy the road in the spring.
