Gingkos are one of my favorite trees. I planted this Gingko tree from a seed!

What you see under the microscope is the casts of the tissue that forms the outermost layer on the top side and on the bottom side of the Gingko leaf.
.
On the top side cast you can see the upper epidermis cells forming amazingly beautiful patterns. On the bottom side cast, you can see the upper epidermis cells as well as the vascular tissue of the leaf veins forming also incredible patterns. Another thing that you can see on the bottom side cast is the leaf stomata (stomata are the pores used by plants to capture CO2 and to release O2).

Leaves are a combination of art and engineering arranged together by evolution/natural selection.

By the way, an interesting fact about Gingko (Ginkgo biloba) is that it is a Gymnosperm. In other words, Gingkos do not produce flowers or fruits. Gingkos are evolutionarily closer to conifers than to flowering plants.

For this video I used an Olympus CX31 microscope at 40x and 100x magnification.
