A performative lecture by Dr. Maria Estrada Fuentes (Performance artist & Theatre and Performance Studies Scholar, University of Amsterdam) engaged in community-building embodied practices that address the relationship between individual and collective bodies. For this, the body is understood as an intersectional place for learning through the interplay between individual and collective rhythms. Overall, this practice-led session provides an initial insight to the role of embodied practice in contemporary conflict transformation
The lecture was part of the Seminar Session 'SCALES OF RHYTHM: THROUGH BODY TO CROWD' on 3 November 2018. While unpacking the diversity of scales and the contexts of rhythm, in this session we will draw special attention to the human body as the translator between the physical environment and subjectivities, and between the individual and the collective. The body is the catalyst for using and misusing physical and urban spaces, and vice versa: movements and behavioural habits, our mechanisms of sense making, and the feeling of belonging are all highly influenced by the organization of private, institutional and collective spaces.
Which rhythms include different subjectivities as one collective voice, and which rhythms exclude subjectivities? And the other way around: which collective rhythms influence bodies? Which bodies (or crowds) are taken into consideration with the spatial decisions and protocols for the development of a city? All these questions are to be discussed during the session.

The Seminar offers both theoretical and practical context to the theme of ‘rhythm’, as part of the seven-month programme in design, art and humanities Fluid Rhythms, which consists of a Summer School and LAB as well. The Seminar aims to address the key concept of ‘rhythm’ in the fields of arts, urban planning, performance, and humanities and will be hosted in collaboration with the scientific consortium Designing Rhythm for Social Resilience. Together we investigate rhythm-led practices as common ground for research and artistic practice. The seminar is open to practicing artists and designers, as well as researchers from different disciplines, interested members of the local community, activists, educators, curators and social servants, who are curious to discover the relevance of rhythms for their practice.
The programme is made possible by the support of the City of Amsterdam Zuidoost, Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Het Pauwhof Fonds, CBK Zuidoost, and has been organized in collaboration with the research group Designing Rhythm for Social Resilience (2018–2022).
