UNDERSTANDING NATURAL LAW | What Does Jesus Really Think About the Law?
What is the purpose of the law? Throughout history, laws have been humanity’s attempt to create order, ensure justice, and uphold values. Yet, as Jesus demonstrated, the law is not merely a set of rules; it is a dynamic framework designed to foster love, justice, and human flourishing. In His teaching, Jesus emphasized that the law is not static but living, requiring us to engage with its principles, adapt it to meet the challenges of changing times, and ensure it serves justice and compassion. This triad—engagement, innovation, and voice—forms the foundation of Jesus’ lessons on the law and offers timeless guidance for how we can transform the systems that shape our world.
Engaging with the law requires us to wrestle with its deeper purpose rather than blindly adhere to its letter. Jesus modeled this in His response to the Pharisees, declaring, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” This statement reframed the law as a tool for human flourishing rather than an oppressive burden. Similarly, when He identified love of God and neighbor as the greatest commandments, Jesus revealed that the heart of the law is relational and purposeful. Engagement demands that we examine the systems governing our lives, ensuring they reflect justice, dignity, and the flourishing of all people. It calls us to participate actively, questioning and shaping the principles that guide us.
Innovation challenges us to reimagine the law while remaining faithful to its core truths. Jesus’ teaching, “You have heard that it was said... But I tell you...” transformed familiar commandments, extending them from outward behaviors to the inner condition of the heart. His declaration, “Love one another as I have loved you,” further deepened the meaning of love, setting a new standard of sacrificial care. Yet Jesus’ innovation did not reject tradition; it fulfilled it. By adapting eternal principles to address new realities, He showed that the law must grow to meet the needs of each generation. Innovation requires humility, creativity, and courage to preserve the law’s essence while ensuring its relevance in a changing world.
The law also demands a voice—one that speaks against injustice, defends the vulnerable, and calls the law back to its purpose. Jesus demonstrated this when He defended the woman accused of adultery, using His voice to expose hypocrisy and uphold compassion. Similarly, He rebuked the Pharisees for neglecting “the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy, and faithfulness.” Voice ensures the law is not misused as a tool of oppression or control. It calls us to stand up for justice, amplify the voices of the marginalized, and challenge systems that fail to serve their purpose. To remain silent in the face of injustice is to betray the law’s intent.
Jesus’ teachings on the law challenge us to action. To engage, innovate, and speak is not optional; it is essential. Without these principles, we risk becoming like the Pharisees, clinging to appearances while neglecting substance. Jesus calls us to a higher standard: to engage with the law’s purpose, innovate to meet the needs of today, and raise our voices to defend justice. The law’s true purpose is only realized when we bring it to life—when we embody its principles of love, justice, and human flourishing in the world around us. The time to act is now.
