In this video, we look at a time-saving way to baste hexagons: cut your fabric into squares with a ruler and rotary cutter, and then baste those squares right to the templates.
This method does result in somewhat bulkier patches, but unless you plan to quilt your project intricately, that extra bulk usually doesn't hurt anything.
