When the hunter Actaeon unknowingly enters a sacred grove, he sees something forbidden: the goddess Artemis (known to the Romans as Diana) bathing in the hidden spring of Gargaphie.

Artemis, protector of the wild and sworn to eternal virginity, reacts with divine fury. She transforms Actaeon into a stag, and he is torn apart by his own hounds—unable to speak or defend himself.

The morality of the tale remains controversial. As Ovid writes:

“The debate is undecided: to some the punishment is more violent than just, merely for seeing the face of a goddess; others approve it and call it fitting because of her strict vow of virginity, and both can make a case.”
— Metamorphoses, Book 3

This version follows Ovid’s Roman telling, where myth meets moral ambiguity.

⚖️ Was the punishment divine justice—or a cruel overreaction?
