If you’ve signed up for the Beginner Academy, this includes one hour of out-of-water training before your session. The Surf Team will guide you through basic techniques and safety pointers, and share tips and tricks to help you get up and riding as quickly as possible.
Beginner Academy is usually scheduled before the first Beginner Surf Session of the day, so double check your reservation for the times of each.
To check in for Beginner Academy, go to the main Surf Center and head to the front desk, where the staff will get you checked in and approve your digital waiver. If you haven’t signed your waiver before arriving, you can take care of it at WacoSurf.com or simply scan one of the QR codes posted around campus.
From there, head down to the surf operations tower in the middle of the pool about 15 minutes before your Beginner Academy start time. After the Surf Team runs you through the basics, you’ll grab a board and hop into the still water outside the ridge, to practice paddling before starting your session.
The wave itself, called “The Coaster”, is a small, gentle ground-swell-type wave with an easy, rolling takeoff. It’s a slow, consistent ride that will give you plenty of time to work on balance, foot placement, and turning. The end section, closest to the wall, speeds up just slightly, giving you a chance to ride further out on the open face.
A couple of notes – Parents of children in Beginner Surf Sessions are allowed to push their kids into the white water around the edges of the peak, as long as they are not in the way of other surfers. And the Beginner Academy and Beginner Surf Sessions tend to sell out weeks in advance, so please plan accordingly!
