Backstage Details On John Cena’s Heel Turn, Plans For The Rock & Travis Scott
Fightful Select is reporting that WWE made tremendous efforts to keep the heel turn from leaking, such as listing the Rhodes/Rock segment as third internally, when positioning it at the end of the show wasn’t a last-minute decision.
The moment was described as “a shock” to many within WWE, and the poster released on Friday promoting The Rock, Cena, and Travis Scott was “100% intentional foreshadowing.”
Scott was expected to be part of the storyline from that moment, and WWE had planned for the rapper’s appearance at Elimination Chamber: Toronto for over a month. However, it remains unclear if Scott was planned to be part of the angle for that long.
Ed Koskey and Brian Parise were internally credited as the writers for the segment, but no producer was listed.
The report further mentions that Cena and Rhodes knew the plan was for them to face off at WWE WrestleMania 41. There is no word regarding plans for The Rock to compete at WrestleMania 41, and while many within WWE believe he may appear at the Showcase Of Immortals in Las Vegas, his status remains unconfirmed.
As we’ve been reporting here on eWn, WWE creative was instructed to prepare with the notion that The Rock wouldn’t compete at WrestleMania 41.
It is unclear how long Cena’s heel turn has been in development, and most of The Rock’s creative has been on a need-to-know basis.
Cena is not scheduled for the next two episodes of RAW, and The Rock mentioned that he is flying to Africa as of last night.
And finally, the report states that the plan was never for Drew McIntyre to win the match, despite conflicting reports that suggested otherwise.
