In the second session of Blurb’s series on Portfolio Building and Branding, Dan Milnor teaches you how to build a photography portfolio using Blurb’s Bookwright software. From discussing smaller details like front and back matter to how to choose the best photo for your portfolio cover, Dan has you covered. Dan discusses the following topics:
Front and back matter of your portfolio. Looking at the design of a book, you learn that the front and the back pages are precious space. The front matter is comprised of a title, half-title, copyright, dedication, preface, acknowledgments, and introduction. The back matter is the technical specs, index, colophon, logo, and biography.
Borders and staying consistent. When you begin to lay out your portfolio, paying attention to even small details like the photo border is essential. There is no right or wrong-sized border, but consistency throughout your portfolio matters.
The cover of your photography portfolio. Your portfolio cover is crucial, but it’s important to consider whether your consumer is right or left-handed. Dan also gives examples of how the same image with different cover treatments can make a massive difference to the finished product.
Portfolio Chapters, sets, and issues. Dan creates a new magazine issue for every new project he completes. Publishing chapters of your portfolio makes it easy and accessible for your consumers and helps you highlight specific tasks and skills depending on your customer.
Editing down photos for your photography portfolio. When you create your portfolio, you’re not necessarily trying to tell a complete story but show your work and capabilities. Dan reminds you there is no room for extras when editing; only the greatest hits can survive the cut.
