Button battery ingestion in children poses significant risk
Around 3,000 children on average swallow button batteries each year in the United States. Piedmont Columbus Regional has reported three battery ingestions in the past year, according to its pediatric emergency department.
A study published in the journal Pediatrics in August 2022 found that 12% of children swallowing batteries had to be admitted to the hospital, after being taken to the emergency room, and that battery ingestions had doubled over a decade.
