My limited understanding is that these ‘genes ' enable a person's body to still function despite being so severely malnourished. This enables their body to survive starvation for a longer period of time, than someone who does NOT have this same gene. The presence or absence of this gene however does NOT decrease the severity of any damages done to either person's body.
