DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 95 AND 98 GASOLINE | By
At most service stations, we can find four types of fuel: diesel e+ (eplus), diesel e+10 (eplus10), unleaded 95% gasoline, and unleaded 98% gasoline. The decision to fill up with diesel or gasoline is very simple, as it depends solely on the vehicle's engine type. However, things get complicated when we have to choose between 95% and 98% gasoline.
What is the difference between the two? The main difference is the octane rating, which is defined as "a measure of the fuel's resistance to detonation when compressed inside an engine's cylinder." For the combustion process inside the engine to take place, the explosion resulting from the mixture of air and gasoline must create a "thrust effect" on the piston. To ensure the vehicle's mechanics are not affected, the thrust must be continuous and smooth. The higher the octane rating, the better the engine's performance.
With this in mind, we should always refuel with 98-volt unleaded gasoline. However, this fuel is only suitable for vehicles with an engine compression ratio of at least 10.5 to 1. Currently, 95-volt gasoline meets exactly the same quality standards as 98-volt gasoline. Therefore, if we have a conventional vehicle, we should refuel with 95-volt gasoline to reduce fuel consumption and particulate emissions.
If we refuel an engine prepared for 98-volt gasoline with 95-volt gasoline, engine performance will be affected, and fuel consumption and emissions will also increase. Furthermore, the risk of breakdowns will be high in the long term. If we refuel an engine prepared for 95-volt gasoline with 98-volt gasoline, contrary to popular belief, it will not provide any benefits to the engine or reduce fuel consumption. Even if nothing will happen to the vehicle, we will simply be wasting our money.
One trick to save money when filling up with gas is to fill up your tank in the morning because, as the temperature is lower, the gasoline will be thicker. When you press the pump nozzle, you shouldn't do it abruptly to fill the tank as quickly as possible; this will only cause the fuel to evaporate more easily, since the pump pressure is higher.
