This Part 2 video goes into more practice with the concept of balancing exposure using ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. It also covers the creative effects of each factor - grain/noise, depth of field, and freezing/showing motion. Knowing how to balance exposure is the first step to getting off auto mode and into manual mode.

This video is Part 2.

If the video appears blurry be sure to select YT playback settings (gear icon) and change video quality up to HD or 4K.

In these two videos we use our Exposure Triangle Training Tool. We sell this tool online as a digital download for $3.00 and as a mailed/laminated version for $5.00 plus $1 postage. You do NOT need our training tool to follow along or get a better understanding of balancing exposure.

You will need your camera manual to learn how to change settings. Each camera brand and model is different. If you don’t have a camera manual, you can search for and download it here: https://focusedcamera.net/download-yo...

If you are new to balancing exposure and the concept of “stops” it will be easier to learn if you stick to whole stops for now. You can turn off ½ and 1/3 stops on your camera. Check your camera manual for how to do this.

In this video we cover some concepts that you can learn more about using our free lessons and cheat sheets: https://www.focusedcamera.net

Basic Steps for Using the Exposure Triangle Training Tool:

1. Take a test shot in Auto Mode (or ½ press shutter to get a reading) and note the ISO, Aperture, and Shutter Speed.
2. Place a mark or markers on the Training Tool on those settings.
3. Adjust the ISO, Aperture, or Shutter Speed for the desired effect by moving the tool mark or marker left or right and counting how many stops you move.
4. Balance the exposure by moving another mark or markers on the tool an equal number of moves in the opposite direction.
5. Your new settings are now ready. Switch the camera to Manual Mode.
6. Enter the new settings one at a time while in Manual Mode.
7. Take a photo. You should have proper exposure (as long as the light or scene has not changed).

Troubleshooting:

Check the camera’s meter.

If the meter (or image) indicates under exposure, move 1 more left on one of the scales and test again. Continue moving one at a time until it is correct.*

If the meter (or image) indicates over exposure, move 1 more right on one of the scales and test again. Continue moving one at a time until it is correct.*

*If you turned off ½ and 1/3 stops you can turn this back on once you have an understanding of the scales and which direction to go to balance. Sometimes proper exposure will be a measurement somewhere in between the full stops. You can also turn on AUTO ISO which will remove one of the factors. Then all you have to balance is aperture and shutter speed. The camera will select the best ISO to do the rest.
