Hollow fibers allow the QuickDraw to be lightweight, compact and filter water quickly. However, if the hollow fibers in the filter break, they will not safely filter water. Broken hollow fibers can result from the filter being dropped and impacted or when water inside the fibers freeze. If you suspect that either of these things have happened, an Integrity Check will allow you to determine if the filter is compromised.
Performing an Integrity Check is simple and can easily be done while you are on a trip without any special tools. It involves completely wetting out the hollow fibers, then attempting to squeeze air through them. You look for a steady stream of air bubbles emerging on the other side—the clean side—of the filter, which would indicate that there are broken fibers and the filter is no longer safe to use. Intact hollow fibers would not allow the air to pass through.
