Orkney Aurora 27/28 February 2014
During January and February 2014, the Aurora, or Northern lights, were particularly active and often visible from the Orkney Islands, even, on one occasion, during full moonlight. This regular spectacle reached a climax on the evening of 27th February, starting at sundown and ending at about 4 am the following morning. The night was clear giving excellent viewing conditions.
This video shows the Aurora as seen from Evie, on North Mainland looking towards Eynhallow, Rousay and Westray. Such was the area of sky which was full of light that in some of the film, the camera is facing due west.
Cameras were Canon 5D and Canon 600D with time exposures ranging from 10 - 15 seconds at full aperture (ISO 3200) to 20 seconds (ISO 1600). Time lapse interval was usually 5 seconds longer than the exposure time to allow for writing to the card. Time lapse was controlled with 'Neewer' electronic cable releases.
Images were assembled in Premiere Pro CS5 and video edited in FCPX.
Soundtrack was made using samples from the soundtrack of '2001 - a space odyssey'.
