I happened to be in the backyard when a hive was greeting its newly mated queen. It's the way the bees roll out the red carpet. They gather on the entry like a parade is about to happen and raise their tail ends and open their nasanov glands. It looks a little like a swarm because so many bees swirl around the hive but it's all about the arrival of the queen. I've kept bees for going on 20 years, but this is only the second time I've been in the beeyard when this was happening.
