Albert Birkle was born in Germany, in a family of professional painters. When he was just 14, the WWI started. At 17, Birkle was forced to serve as a soldier and witness the horror of the war. From 1919 to 1926 he studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. He later traveled to Italy, France, Denmark, Norway, and Eastern Europe. In 1932, in attempt to escape from the ruling of the National Socialists, Birkle immigrated to Austria, but the Third Reich reached that country too. His artwork was declared to be “degenerate”, his paintings were removed from public collections, and a painting ban was imposed on him.
