Thanks for joining me in today's lesson. In this video I break down the verse and chorus guitar parts for Happiness from the 1975.
Although I’m a rocker at heart I do have a soft spot for funk rhythm guitar! I spent a lot of my time as a teenager dissecting 16th note funk guitar parts from the likes of James Brown and Nile rodgers.
Hearing David Bowie’s let's dance opened my ears to Nile Rodgers excellent production and rhythm guitar work underpinned by Stevie Ray Vaugn’s blistering solo near the end made me come to the realization that not only are the styles great in their own right but they are also fused in some cases. If I was going to get good at guitar I needed to study as many styles as I could.
I’m guilty of being an old soul, I don’t really get much from modern music. To be honest I think we are due a revival of some good rock bands but I have been waiting for some time now…
This tune did catch my ear though and gives me a platform to teach you how to play funk rhythm guitar parts that can translate into other songs.
The whole song is based on the same rhythm alternating between a single note vamp and a 3 chord progression using some cool Bar chord derived triads.
