A Chechen woman was kidnapped and possibly killed for refusing to marry.
In 2022, Seda Suleimanova refused to enter into a marriage forced upon her by her parents and fled Grozny for St. Petersburg. There, she lived in a shelter and planned to marry for love.
All this time, her relatives tried to bring her home. On August 23, 2023, police arrested Seda on a trumped-up theft charge—she allegedly stole jewelry from her mother. Seda was taken back to Chechnya and has been incommunicado since.
In April, a criminal case was opened for murder.
Seda's friend, Elena Patyaeva, started a petition demanding the Investigative Committee take control of the case and ensure an objective investigation.
