Renting a Vintage Convertible in Cuba Was Unforgettable
In Cuba you will see lots of colourful classic cars. In Old Havana and Varadero you can rent these old cars. It is estimated that there are around 60,000 classic American cars being driven around Cuba. Mostly are from the 1950’s, but some are from the 40’s and even the 30’s. It's a wonderful sight.
The story behind this, is an intriguing aspect of the country’s history. Cuba has never manufactured its’ own cars, so they have always relied solely on automotive imports. Their primary automotive supplier between the late 1910’s to the end of the 1950’s was the United States. But there is more. American car companies have uses Cuba as a testing ground for their new releases. This means that cars were often available for sale in Cuba, before they hit the roads in the US.
A tour in a classic car is not really expensive. The car comes with a driver, so you don’t have to worry. You can rent it for one or two hours. The driver takes you to several scenic places. Pick a convertible, sit back and enjoy.
But you have more options. You can also take a taxi, almost everywhere on the island. This experience allows you to meet the local people even more. Or, you can do both of course.
