In this troubleshooting tutorial video, I'll show how to fix the "external component has thrown exception" problem in Batman: Arkham Asylum. This is a problem related to the lack of an older version of DirectX driver. This problem generally occurrs during startup of Batman: Arkham Asylum, this is why sometimes this is referred to as "External component" startup error of Batman: Arkham Asylum.

To fix this,
1. Open the game folder
Default location for Steam users is:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Asylum GOTY
2. Open the "redist" folder
In the video, I show to find this folder.
3. Open the "DirectX" folder
4. Run "DXSETUP"
If your game doesn't have this folder, follow the next instructions.
1. Go to the Internet
2. Search for "DirectX 8"
3. Open the Microsoft page for Microsoft DirectX 8 Runtime
4. Download it
If the page is no longer available, follow the instructions in the video to use Internet Archive's Wayback Machine to access a recorder version of the page.
5. Create a folder
6. Extract the downloaded file contents into the folder
7. Open the folder
8. Run DXSETUP
In the video, I show to extract and run this installer.
Now you can play Batman: Arkham Asylum.
