Located about 20km from the capital Tunis and not far from the ancient ruins of Carthage, Sidi Bou Said is a beautiful and charming small town perched atop of a hill overlooking the Mediterranean sea and the Gulf of Tunis. At first glance you may mistake the place with a Greek village due to its whitewashed buildings with blue doors and ornaments. In fact, Sidi Bou Said is an Andalusian style village as in the 17th century the Arabs from Andalusia arrived and settled here.
Named after a religious figure who lived in the town, Abu Said al-Baji, it was previously called Jabal el-Menar. The town is a popular touristic place in Tunisia and it also has a reputation as a town of artists since many artists lived and worked here.
You can enjoy a relaxing walk through the charming streets filled with cozy cafes, souvenirs shops, beautiful houses and art galleries.
Worth a visit is the “Cafe des délices,” situated beautifully on the hillside. From your seat, you can enjoy a splendid view of the Mediterranean sea. Other places of interest include the Museum Dar el-Annabi and Palace Dar Nejma Ezzahra. There is also a nice beach with elegant yacht marina.
