Het zijn economisch zware tijden voor de gelukkig getrouwde Ray Weiss (Tom Blair), eigenaar van een houtzagerij in een klein Amerikaans stadje. Zijn leven en dat van zijn immer begripvolle tweede vrouw Jean (Ellen McLaughlin) wordt volledig overhoopgehaald door een brief van de dochter van Ray. De beschuldiging in de brief stort het gezin in een diepe crisis.
Jon Josts The Bed You Sleep In is een poëtisch en beklemmend arthousedrama dat zich afspeelt tegen de achtergrond van de economische teloorgang van de houtindustrie in Oregon in het midden van de jaren 90. Naast het gezin richt Jost zijn camera ook op de landschappen, het werk in de houtfabriek en de kronkelende smalle landweggetjes rondom het dorpje Toledo.
