On July 4th 2012, a 65 year old man named Paul LeMaitre attempted one of the most difficult, longest running athletic competitions in the United States: the Mount Marathon Race. Famed for its dangerous terrain and breakneck pace, Seward, Alaska's most well known tradition is not for the faint of heart, but that hasn't stopped it from occurring nearly every year since 1915. If anything, the risks only serve to add to the legend and fame of those who succeed, or even finish. Perhaps most shocking is the fact that, over a century after the race's inception, there has been only one fatality - and despite what you might think, it didn't occur the way you'd expect.
