In this video I use the Japanese technique of scorching wood Shou sugi ban, or yakisugi.
I use this charring technique to produce a beautiful and very unique grain effect although, originally this technique was used to seal timber from the elements.
The Timber charring/scorching technique is excellent fun, but I would say it certainly requires practice. If you are following this method, I would recommend to keep the burn ahead of you and try to "push" the burn along, if that makes sense.
