(In other words: Itโs almost winter up here in the Northern Hemisphere. Winter is a bummer. The winter holidays including the Winter Solstice were crafted to distract us from these cold, dark daysโฆ)
This video is intended as a Winter Solstice Celebration, because you know Dasher & Dancer, Comet & Vixen, Christmas & Hanukkah & Kwanzaa & St. Nicks Day, but do you recall the most ancient winter holiday of all? โฆThat would be the Winter Solstice, the oldest & most essential of all the winter holidays, a cheerleading squad for the Sun as the Sun descends & ascends from the dark side, a celebration of the Sunโs death & rebirth. Being as dependent on the Sun as we humans are, weโve been throwing a party for the Sunโs resurrection since at least the Stone Age (& our ancestors left behind monuments to prove it). Of course, you already know that all the megalithic monuments worth talking about & trekking to track the movement of the Sun across the sky, like Newgrange & Maeshowe that are aligned to capture the Sunโs sunrise debut on the Winter Solstice. Nearly every culture across space and time whittled & wove together some traditions for celebrating the longest night/shortest day of the year & the lengthening of the days as we make that slow crawl out of the swirling, blustery tunnel of winter. Christmas traditions (& all of the other winter festivals of lights & celebrations of death & rebirth) were prolly inspired by ancient celebrations of the Winter Solstice. The ancient Romans celebrated the start of winter with a raucous party of gift-giving in Saturnโs honor (Saturnalia) & the ancient Persians lit stuff on fire to honor the god of light Mithra. Christmas trees decorated with bright, shiny objects, holiday candle lightings & the exchanging of gifts take their cue from Winter Solstice & Yule celebrations. The Norse custom of burning a giant Yule log gathered everyone around the warm, toasty fire for 12 straight days for feasting & binge storytelling to distract from the cold & the darknessโkeeping them busy & allaying their S.A.D. until the Sun could rise again. (According to the History Channel, โThe Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new piglet or calf that would be born during the coming year,โ a promise of new life & regeneration in the spring.) The slow pace & long nights of winter offer us much needed time to dream & hope of presents weโd like to unwrap in the new year. And to guide you through those winter meditations & reflections, wishing & dreaming, this ASMR witch offers 3 simple Winter Solstice Spells to tide you over until spring.
Winter Survival Tip: Our ancestors who gathered round the Yule log were definitely onto something. If you struggle with S.A.D. (as many do), science suggests that โfire gazingโ is one of the best remedies for coping with the long, dark nights. According to the experts, sitting in front of a real, natural fire (e.g., a woodstove fire / a fireplace yule log fire) for 20-30 provides you with infrared radiation exposure (felt as heat) that can help alleviate your winter blues by energizing the cells in your body, stimulating melatonin production & regulating your circadian rhythms. So, while sun exposure or a light box may help, sitting in front of a natural fire (but far enough away to avoid inhaling too much carbon monoxide) can be even better for your physical & mental health. Merry Yuletide, Happy Solstice, Happy Holidays!
