Writing Through Adversity with Author Will Dowd
In our latest conversation, Henry sits down with author and cartoonist Will Dowd. They discuss the challenges of seeking therapy, what the world looks like when your life has been inverted, and how press on when you don't have all the answers.
Will Dowd is a poet, essayist, and visual artist based outside Boston. His work weaves writing, illustration, and multimedia experiments to explore perception, imagination, and the surprising connections between art and science.
Will is a regular editorial cartoonist for The Boston Globe, known for his portraits of literary and historical figures. His debut essay collection, Areas of Fog, was named a Massachusetts Book Awards Nonfiction “Must Read.” His writing and artwork have appeared in The Washington Post, NPR, Writer’s Digest, The Boston Globe Magazine, Lithub, Poets & Writers online, and elsewhere. He currently serves as a poetry editor for Post Road Magazine.
Will has received numerous awards and fellowships, including a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant, a WPR Creative Grant from Harvard University, a James Merrill House Residency, a St. Botolph Club Foundation Artist Award, a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry Award, and a Key West Literary Seminar Scholarship. He holds degrees from Boston College, New York University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Living with physical disabilities, Will uses a range of assistive technologies to write and draw. In multimedia projects, he explores how these innovative technologies can empower mobility- and visually-challenged artists to transcend limitations and expand the boundaries of literary and visual forms.
