In advanced kidney disease, how much protein you eat can change how fast you head toward dialysis. A large Cochrane review found that a very low protein diet probably lowers the chance of reaching kidney failure in stage 4 and 5 CKD. The catch: it has to be done carefully to avoid malnutrition.

In this video, board-certified nephrologist Dr. Sean Hashmi walks through what the protein research actually shows, how low is low, why the type of protein matters, and the safety guardrails that make this work.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
How protein intake influences CKD progression toward dialysis
What the Cochrane review found for low versus very low protein diets
Why supervision matters to avoid protein energy wasting
Why protein type, with a plant-predominant emphasis, matters for kidney health
Practical, evidence-based targets to discuss with your team
