This is a conceptual piece that follows the first 2048 digits in Pi. The digits are plotted along a sequencer that triggers a corresponding note in the minor scale (or rest note). The sequencer is moving at 56 BPM.
0 = Rest Note
1 = Root Note
2 = Second degree of the minor scale
3 = Third degree of the minor scale
4 = Fourth degree of the minor scale
5 = Fifth degree of the minor scale
6 = Sixth degree of the minor scale
7 = Seventh degree of the minor scale
8 = Octave of the Root Note
9 = Octave of the Second degree of the minor scale
The digits were plotted 8 at a time. If the digits 3, 4, or 5 are repeated within those 8, then a second variation of the digit is triggered. This variation is the same note, pitch shifted to be played in the sub bass region. This rule set created unique dynamics as well as more rests in the upper harmonic content. These sub bass notes can be seen in the visualizer notated as "3 low", "4 low" and "5 low"".
There is a second harmonic synth that plays at the beginning of every measure (unless the measure begins with a rest note).
This is plotted by hand. It was a unique meditation experience. I am fascinated that this could carry on infinitely.
There is something fishy going on with my fourth degree. Not sure what kind of pitch shifting I messed up when bouncing the sound design, but there is a type of dissonance that feels like an accidental. Because of its haunting quality, I decided to keep it. I find it enjoyable.
You can follow along the digits by watching the visualizer. The mixer faders are notated. Unfortunately because I've decided to use 0 as a rest note, 0 is not notated. When you feel a rest note, that is the 0. I think using 0 as a rest note was a good idea because the rests in the piece create sentences of expression that would otherwise run on infinitely.
It is particularly interesting to think of the countless ways you could interpret these digits into a music piece.
